Spreader Bars

Spreader bars are BDSM accessories that hold legs, arms, or both apart in a fixed position:

• Ankle spreaders — Keep legs spread for vulnerability and accessibility during bondage play
• Wrist spreaders — Keep hands apart, preventing the restrained person from protecting or touching themselves
• Cross spreaders — A bar with four attachment points for both wrists and ankles simultaneously

Wearing a spreader bar creates a sense of surrender and helplessness that is central to many BDSM dynamics. Spreaders combine well with handcuffs, blindfolds, and other bondage accessories.

As a beginner, look for:

• Adjustable length — Choose a spreader bar that is adjustable in length so you can experiment with what feels comfortable
• Padded cuffs — Soft, padded ankle or wrist cuffs prevent chafing and uncomfortable pressure points. Neoprene or faux leather cuffs are suitable for beginners
• Not too long — Start with a 50 to 70 cm bar. Longer bars (90+ cm) create a very vulnerable position that can be overwhelming for beginners
• Quick-release closures — Choose cuffs with Velcro or quick-release buckles so you can free yourself quickly if needed

Using a spreader bar while standing is strongly discouraged for beginners:

• With legs spread apart, it is difficult to maintain your balance, especially if your hands are also restrained
• A fall while wearing a spreader bar can cause serious injury because you cannot brace yourself
• The spread position places more stress on the hip joints and knees than you might initially expect

Always start in a lying or sitting position on a comfortable surface such as a bed. Standing use is only suitable for experienced practitioners who know how to maintain balance and have a partner who can physically support them.
